This pagoda is the largest of its kind in China. It is located inside Biyun (Azure Clouds) Temple on the eastern slope of Fragrant Hill in the western suburbs of Beijing. In 1748 the temple was expanded again and the pagoda was added to it.
The pagoda is 34.7 meters high, the tallest among all the existing pagodas of the same style in China. At the bottom of the pagoda is a high platform made of stone slabs with stone steps leading up to the top. A square platform stands fight in the middle of the high platform. An arched gate opens on the southern side of this platform and stairs inside lead up to the top, on which stand five pagodas. The one in the middle is itself a small version of a vajrasana pagoda, with five miniature pagodas of the same style on the pedestal. It is a rare example of such pagodas.
The main vajrasana was made of white marble covered by carved statues of Buddha, bodhisattvas, heavenly kings, guardians, dragons, phoenixes, lions, elephants and other animals and plants. It is a giant work of stone carving.
