24-Zig Road Witnessing the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression

The 24-Zig Road is located one kilometer south of Qinglong County in Qianxinan Prefecture, Guizhou Province. It was an important part of the Yunnan-Myanmar Road (also known as Burma Road) during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and a defining feature of the Stilwell Road that bore witness to the collaboration between Chinese and American people, military and civilian, in the fight against fascism.

As the name suggests, the 24-Zig Road has 24 sharp bends and stretches about four kilometers. It winds on the mountain slope with an inclination of about 60 degrees and climbs about 260 meters.

During the Second World War, the American aid to China had to pass through the 24-Zig Road to reach the front line and Chongqing after being sent to Kunming via the Yunnan-Myanmar Road. Upon the outbreak of the Pacific War, U.S. Army Brigadier General Joseph Stilwell was ordered to maintain transportation on the Yunnan-Myanmar Road. Japanese aggressors sent planes to bomb the 24-Zig Road several times. The U.S. military and the Chinese military and civilians spared no effort to protect the road, to ensure the smooth transportation of international aid to China.

In 2006, the 24-Zig Road was listed as a national cultural heritage site. In 2015, it was named a National Patriotic Education Demonstration Center by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee. Tourists from all over the world are attracted to the tourist spots along the road, including the restored Annan Ancient City, the viewing platform, and the Caravan's Stockaded Village. In Stilwell Town, there are such attractions as American-style village church, bar, winery, café, theater, and the U.S. military headquarters, recreating the vivid scenes of China and the U.S. fighting side by side during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.
