Heilongtan (Black Dragon Pond) is a new popular summer resort located in Miyun County, about 100 kilometers northeast of Beijing. Every summer, visitors from the urban oven flock to the pond to escape scalding temperatures. The getaway is home to 18 lagoons and three waterfalls with a height of 220 meters.
However Heilongtan grows quiet in winter, though ice waterfalls, icicles, and ice flowers around the lagoons offer a different excuse to trek out of the city.
However travelers should be aware, winters in Heilongtan are not mild. The average lowest winter temperature here is about 15 degrees below zero, 7 degrees lower than that in Beijing's downtown area. Not everyone can resist the strong mountain winds howling across Heilongtan.
But for a taste of real winter and a chance to see something new, Heilongtan is worth a visit.
Located near Shicheng Village, Miyun County, the scenic spot is a four-kilometer-long deep valley. Twisted stones and peaks look like different animals, some of which come complete with local legends.
This winter being colder than the average, waterfalls and streams in Heilongtan are adorned with columns of icicles.
The longest frozen waterfall is about 36 metres in length. Water splashing from the waterfall freezes, covering rocks. Only a very small amount of water remains to run, etching the ice like glass.
The frozen waterfalls and icicles are illuminated with different colors as the sun moves through the sky.
The frozen waterfalls at Heilongtan are arguably the best waterfalls for photographers. Great access, consistent below freezing temperatures and the geology of the mountains here lend themselves perfectly for an icy adventure.
Generally, it takes three hours to walk through the four-kilometer valley. If you venture there for winter photography, allow yourself more time.
A few caves along the valley are good shelter to escape the cold mountain winds.
Local knowledge is the key to an enjoyable experience. A guide who knows the area and its conditions on an intimate level will allow you to avoid missing the mountains or some of the attractions. They can offer you proper routes for ideal viewing.
Please note that all the ice waterfalls are not suitable for climbing. Do not try to climb on the ice facades. The waterfalls are not thick or strong enough to bear weight.

Dining: Local residents operate a few small restaurants outside the entrance of the valley. They offer simple Chinese food and drink.
To get there: Drive along Jing-Mi (Beijing-Miyun Road) to Miyun Town. Then continue to drive north or towards the direction of the Miyun Reservoir. Heilongtan is just minutes from the reservoir, and any local resident can point you in the right direction. Bus routes Beijing-Heilongtan are available at Dongzhimen, Xizhimen, Gongzhufen and Qianmen.
