An earthquake measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale jolted New Caledonia's Loyalty Islands in the South Pacific at 12:16 a.m. Friday Beijing Time, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The epicenter was monitored at 20.6 degrees south latitude and 168.6 degrees east longitude, with a depth of about 10 kilometers, the center said.
